Portland ... Weird

Ear-Popping Spiders, Flying Fire Ants

Morning Edition, May 9, 2007 · Bees may be dying, as we've reported. But other insects are doing fine. An Oregon kid complained of popping in his ear — "like Rice Krispies," he said. Doctors discovered two spiders. And on a United Airlines flight from Washington, D.C., to Portland, Ore., fire ants emerged from an overhead compartment just before takeoff. A passenger says everybody switched to another plane, leaving the ants with no frequent-flier miles.

There is a bumper sticker on some cars in Portland, Oregon, where I grew up and lived for the first half of my life so far. I love Portland. City of Roses. Parks. And Zoobomb. The bumper sticker says, "Keep Portland Weird." My brother-in-law says there's no way to stop it.

I love, love, love Portland. Home of Powell's ... the best bookstore. Also, land of no sales tax and therefore a shopper's paradise. When the Public Library Assoc held its conference in Portland more than 10 years ago, the stores were thronged with happy ladies (of the librarian type) over-running the whole city. I remember merchants carefully asking, "What's going on?" They should lobby to have that conference back!
